Guang Yu Zhang is a Shanghai based artist whose fantastical works come in many forms: panting, photography and mixed media. Following his studies of Fine Art in London, Zhang returned to his hometown, shaping his unique artistic style of mixed inspirations from both traditional and modern into a collage of cultural references.
Upon graduating, Zhang was still working purely in oils. Once he returned to Shanghai, he was hired as a graphic designer, coming in contact for the first time with software. He then took one of the oil paintings he had made at university and produced a digital collage from it. That was the beginning of one of his most recognized series, “Oriental Memory I”. Exotic birds are depicted across vibrant backgrounds, exploring rich vegetation while color diffusions drifting across the work give it a dreamlike quality. Intricate patterns invite a look into even the smallest of details, creating a contemporary collage of contrasting feathered and mystical creatures. Eastern landscapes evolve through poignant motifs and bold brushstrokes, unleashing the imagination to explore a new and untouched world.
