Elle Hanley is a self-taught American Fine Art photographer currently living and working in Seattle. Hanley started working with the camera eight years ago, creating self-portraits using a minimalistic and intimate background. Her self-portraits oscillate between modes of hiding and revealing. The artist’s facial expressions and emotions are mostly covered by her hair, leaving only the feminine form, exploring questions of female representation and the relationship between body and self.
Hanley enjoys the challenge of creating something classic and timeless through a thoroughly modern process, and the contradiction between the two is a strong theme throughout her work. Currently mixing the realms of art and fashion, her delicate and elegant photographic works carry surrealist qualities, capturing rarely viewed or imagined moments and environments.
